| Theme Song Actually Leads to a "Brand
New Life"

During my frosh year, I had a dream. It all started this one rainy day,
when my roommate Laura and I were downloading TV Theme songs off Napster
- those were the days, eh? Being children of the 80's - the age of quality
sitcoms - we came across awesome ones that touched our hearts. And among
the Full House, Growing Pains and Family Ties theme songs, we came across
one that changed the entire scope of frosh year. It was the theme to Who's
the Boss?
Now Who's the Boss? wasn't even my very favorite eighties sitcom. I'm
partial to Saved by the Bell myself, but Who's the Boss was one of those
shows I watched religiously. I suppose the difference is that Saved by
The Bell has been on in syndication for the past few years at seven in
the morning and so we had the option of watching it if we really wanted
to. However, Who's the Boss? had virtually disappeared from television
altogether.
Thus, when we came upon the theme song, we started reminiscing about
old episodes and laughing at Angela's hideous glasses and Tony's accent
- who else says "Angeler" and "Jon-tin", really? The theme song became
a part of our morning routine. We'd play it when we woke up in the morning
to get us pumped for the day.
This television theme song also became our frosh year theme song. We
made a CD at the end of the year with a bunch of music that we had listened
to and that song was the headliner. The problem remained however that
we missed the show. We missed it so, we long for it, really yearned for
it. Why on Earth had it been taken out of syndication? Nobody knew. Such
a great show was being so discriminatingly neglected and yet Full House
still played twice a day.
But, you see, one otherwise ordinary day this past summer, I received
a phone call from a friend who informed me that a Who's the Boss? marathon
that would be airing on the Prime the very night I was meant to attend
a U2 concert. I was forced to make the decision: Bono and the Edge or
Tony Micelli and Angela Bower? And yes, believe me, I considered the latter
alternative.
I answered not the call of 80's hilarity that night. Instead, I enjoyed
the concert I'd emptied my savings to attend. But before we knew what
happened, that marathon spawned syndication. When I told Laura, it was
like a dream of ours had come true. No more just wishing for Mona's antics
every morning when Brand New Life played on our Win Amp systems. Our dream
had come true, bestowed upon us much like Tony's job as Angela's housekeeper
had somehow been bestowed upon him. And now we are able to enjoy Who's
the Boss? six times a day!
So for those of you who enter third floor's common room and see Who's the
Boss on television again, scoff not. We longed for this moment. Now that
it has come, we must reap in its splendor at every opportunity - which conveniently
presents itself at noon, 5pm and 2 am every day. |
