"It's much easier to be an uncle," says Tony Danza, laughing.
Danza calls himself a "friendly authority figure" and believes
that discipline can help a child resist peer pressure: "I'm sure that
my son thinks twice before he does something, because he knows, 'Gee, I
gotta go home and face this maniac.' Maybe in that second that he takes
to think about it he'll say, 'I'm not going to do this.' Maybe that second
will save his life." Unlike his own father, Danza does not believe
that physical punishment is the way to discipline: "My father was known
to use his hands a little bit. That's the way it was, and I probably deserved
it most of the time. In a world where men were less emotional and more restrained,
that was his way of showing love," recalls Danza, "and when I
got home late, I knew he loved me." Danza has learned from his father's
mistakes: "I'm more open to my son. We talk, whereas I was afraid to
talk to my father. It's a wodnerful thing when your son comes up to you
and gives you a kiss and says, 'See ya later, Dad.' It's just terrific." |
