Stranded on a Desert Island

If you were stranded on a desert island, what movie would you take with you?
Oh, I have a VCR there?

It’s a very high-tech island.
The first film that comes to mind is The Grapes of Wrath. It’s one of the most incredible movies ever made. When I’m in the road and working, one of the things I like to do is pop in a movie. I very rarely get through it because I begin to relax and fall asleep. But I guess I wouldn’t need a sleep aid on the island, right? I’d just have all the time in the world to watch it.

What CD would you bring?
Lately I’ve been listening to Frank Sinatra. The words he sings are great: [singing] "Got my tweed pressed, got my best vest, all I need now is a girl. Got my striped tie, got my hopes way up high, I got the time, I got the place, I got the rhythm, all I need is a girl to go with ‘em" See, now, these are some great words. So I’d take the man, Frank, along, one of his CDs. And also a medley of all those old disco hits like "Give ME the Night," "Stomp!" I’d want all that too because at night I may get down. I’ll have the beautiful starlight instead of a twirling disco ball.

Who would you want as a companion?
I’d have to bring my wife, Tracy.

How about a photograph?
Since Tracy will already be there, a photo of my two girls, Katie[14] and Emily[8]. And I’d stick a little snapshot of my 30-year-old son, Marc, in there too. I know that sounds corny, but hey.

What material possession?
I’ll take my horn, my cornet. I’m living in Malibu now, and I sit on the patio and play my trumpet. I’m driving the whole neighborhood crazy.

Aside from annoying the neighbors, what would you miss most about civilization?
Probably reading the New York Times, I read that every day.

What leading lady would you choose as a companion?
There are a couple I like out there I’m going to go a little offbeat on this one, though. I’d like to take Emily Watson with me. And why? I have my reasons, how’s that?

If you could bring along a character you’ve played, who would you chose?
I think I’d take cabbie Tony Banta with me. He’s a stand-up guy and I could pretty much boss him around. See how I slipped that in?
